The spotlight on solar water heaters

The South African government sees solar water heaters (SWH) as the ideal way of providing hot water to communities without the burden of water-heating monthly bills. The large-scale introduction of SWH’s is a means to reduce the demand for energy on the national grid.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in America conducted “one of the most exhaustive and detailed studies to date” which found that solar homes sold 20% faster, for 17% more than equivalent non-solar homes.

Solar Challenge 2010: SA’s epic race

South Africa’s second Solar Challenge race, which was organised by the Advanced Energy Foundation and the Innovation Hub, kicked off on 24 September and ended on Saturday 2 October, with the Innovation Hub in Pretoria as the start and finish line.

The French Development Agency (AFD) is appraising large scale solar water heater (SWH) rollout projects in South Africa that AFD could finance. In order to share experience on such projects and draw lessons that may be used in the context of South Africa, AFD invited key stakeholders to a workshop focused on the successful Tunisian experience (the PROSOL program).

A solar mission to Africa

eSolar, a leading provider of modular, scalable solar thermal power technology, has partnered with Johannesburg-based Clean Energy Solutions (CES) to open eSolarSA in order to expand sales operations across Sub- Saharan Africa. Through the agreement, CES is granted the exclusive right to represent and distribute eSolar's concentrating solar power technology throughout a seven-country region, including the Republic of South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

Eskom's subsidy on solar water heating

By reducing the amount of gas and electricity needed to heat water, solar water heaters save water heating costs. By using sunlight as opposed to combustible sources or fossil fuel-produced electricity, fewer pollutants are being infiltrated into the environment.
