Will CDM lift off in Africa?

The CDM world is looking to Africa, with the recently held Accra Climate Change Talks 2008, as well as the Africa Carbon Forum in Dakar in September, highlighting an increasing interest in the continent as a promising CDM destination.

Impressions from the Africa Carbon Forum

The first Africa Carbon Forum was held in Dakar, Senegal, from the 3rd to the 5th of September 2008, and attracted more than six hundred participants from sixty countries, including forty project developers and representatives of thirty-six Designated National Authorities (DNA), including South Africa’s, responsible for host country approval of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.

Current power problems - The East African power industry is characterised by insufficient electricity generation capacity, high technical losses of about 30-40 %, and very low electricity population access rates of 12 % on average.

Is SA ready for biofuels?

If South Africa’s key motivation for biofuels is economic development — then the country may not be ready for the development of a biofuels industry, due to its lack of infrastructure.
