The first PIQO small wind turbine has been made with the aid of Luran® S KR 2858 G3, an ASA resin from BASF. Developed by the Dutch company EverkinetIQ International in close collaboration with Pekago, Albis and BASF, the new wind turbine is intended to provide locally generated energy on industrial facilities, high-rise buildings, hospitals and other municipal buildings as well as private homes.
According to a new report from the EU-funded UpWind project, ultra-large 20 MW wind turbines are feasible. The report, which was launched at the EWEA (European Wind Energy Association) 2011 Annual Event in Brussels, explored the design limitations of upscaling wind turbines to 20 MW and found that they would have rotor diameters of around 200 m, compared to some 120 m on today’s 5 MW turbines.

Launch of new gearless wind turbine

Siemens Energy has launched a new direct drive gearless wind turbine for low to moderate wind speeds. The core feature of the new SWT-2.3-113 wind turbine is an innovative drive concept with a compact permanent magnet generator.
Tanzania’s National Development Corp. (NDC) signed a deal worth US$120-million with a wind energy company. Tanzania’s first wind farm, which will add an estimated 50 MW of energy to the national power grid, will begin construction early next year in the Singida region.

Engineering for education

At the SSI “Engineering for Education” function held in Pretoria during the first week of February, master of ceremonies John Robbie said: “Education is about caring and the Lead SA campaign is about partnerships between the private sector and government, and with this initiative SSI is part of Lead SA.”
Johnson Controls, an organisation that delivers products, services and solutions that increase energy-efficiency in buildings, has introduced the York magnetic centrifugal chiller (YMC2), which offers superior efficiency and sound performance, and is claimed to be 10% more efficient than conventional, variable-speed chillers. 
The Carbon Trust has selected ACAL Energy to receive a £1-million investment by winning the Polymer Fuel Cell Challenge, an initiative with the aim of accelerating access to new markets for fuel cell products.

Toyota reveals new hybrids

On 10 January 2011, Toyota USA unveiled the low-emissions Prius family of vehicles at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new Prius v midsize hybrid-electric vehicle and the Prius c Concept vehicle, which are set to broaden the appeal of Prius to all ages and lifestyles, joined the hybrid brand.
Numatic International’s newly launched NuSave, ProSave and ProVac range may appear similar to the original products, but they differ in design, style and most importantly, take the environment into consideration.
Sasol’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for the domestic market, called Sasol Homegas, was recently implemented at the newly built Waterfall Country Estate in Midrand. According to, this estate is currently the largest property development in the country and the first to use this gas.
