Belgotex Floors was named the overall winner at the 2015 Massmart Supplier Environmental Awards for their environmentally-friendly product manufacturing and sustainable business practices.
Until recently, Belgotex Floors had the largest single roof-mounted 1MW photovoltaic solar installation in the country, which currently provides 5% of its annual energy requirement, as well as an onsite water treatment plant that reuses all the water from their operations.
The company also follows a sustainable product lifecycle approach, which enabled a saving of up to 35% 45% in water and up to 38% in generation of waste since receiving ISO14001 certification in 2009. What’s more, Belgotex produces its own Eco fibre using recycled production waste instead of virgin polymers.
The announcement was made at an awards ceremony held at the World Wildlife Fund green headquarters in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, where Massmart’s top 10 finalists were honoured for their commitment to sustainable supply chain management.
“It is always difficult to choose just one winner, however in light of the water scarcities that South Africa faces, we applaud the work that Belgotex is doing to reuse water and reduce energy and chemical consumption,” commented Alex Haw, Massmart Group Sustainability Manager.
“We are well aware that beyond just our own operations, we need to work with our suppliers to advocate sustainable practices and the 10 finalists were really exceptional in terms of the effort that they have made when it comes to implementing sustainable practices in their business,” he added.
A rigorous review process
Every year, Massmart surveys the environmental practices of key suppliers on a self-assessment basis. The survey, which covers packaging rationalisation, water conservation, operational energy efficiency, environmental product attributes, third party certification and biodiversity impact mitigation amongst others. The company has also developed additional surveys that deal with sustainable seafood and timber sourcing.
Those suppliers that score above 70% on these self-assessments are scrutinised further through media coverage checks, input from leading environmental NGOs such as the Forest Stewardship Council, Conservation South Africa and, the WWF and Green Peace, as well as site visits to verify their survey feedback.
The finalists of the 2015 Massmart Supplier Environmental Awards include:
