New product developed to make oil and mining workers safer

A South African company has co-developed a new product to help oil and mining companies in the country and the rest of Africa to make their workers safer and more productive.

TimeTronics, based in Johannesburg, which specialises in the supply, installation and maintenance of quality access control products and human capital management information systems, has joined forces with a UK-based logistics specialist to the energy sector, JJ Black Consultancy Limited, to develop the new product that will help oil and mining companies in Africa to improve the security and productivity of their employees.

The Mobile Access Control System (MACS) allows oil and mining companies to monitor where employees are located at any time during work hours – even if they are based at multiple sites.

Dean Mellitchey of TimeTronics said: “The Mobile Access Control System works by employees swiping their ID cards or fingers, using biometrics in front of a series of readers that records their movements to and from camp and out in the field, such as at a mine, oil rig or well head.

“The MACS includes a battery back-up power supply and is fully portable, so oil and mining companies can take this out into remote parts of Africa and monitor, in a single web-based system, the movement of their employees.

“This system will help energy companies to improve productivity of their employees as they will know who is working where and when, and it will allow them to manage their employees better.

“As the MACS helps oil and mining companies to know where their employees are at any time, particularly in less safe environments, this will also help to improve security of those employees,” Mellitchey says.

Jim Black of JJ Black Consultancy Limited added: “It is a private network, so it does not need to link into a company’s existing IT networks. The MACS produces a report – summarised with a simple traffic light’s graphic – showing if a site manager needs to take any action.”

JJ Black Consultancy Limited, which has offices in the UK but operates throughout Africa, plus the USA and the Caribbean, specialises in developing comprehensive asset tracking and fleet management software for energy companies.

One of its services is called ICAMS, which is an asset tracking and management system for use in the aviation, maritime and ground transport sectors. ICAMS integrates with its recently-launched service called the Single Platform System (SPS).

The Single Platform System (SPS) provides, for the first time, on one single, web-based system a comprehensive analysis and picture of all air, land and sea assets in any geographical location. This helps oil companies to respond more quickly and effectively in major emergencies.
