Lesego Gaegane is a key account manager at the NBI.

Her role involves implementing energy efficiency projects in both industrial and commercial companies. Lesego engages with these companies to develop scopes of work that will identify areas of opportunities to save on energy and optimise processes. Through these interventions, companies also save on costs.

1.    What aspect of your job do you enjoy most?
I enjoy that I work with various companies in various sectors since I get exposed to different processes. I love the fact that I assist companies to realise that energy efficiency is not a tedious effort and doesn't cost a lot of money.

2.    Please name some of your biggest achievements during your career?
In 2010, I was selected as one of the conference delegates for WoENG (Women in Engineering) and I had the opportunity to work on a project to uplift informal settlements in the Western Cape with regards to their grey water.

More recently, I was elected as a committee member in the SAEE chapter FEE (Females in Energy Efficiency).

3.    a. What is the best professional advice you ever received?
My mentor once told me: “Don't plan your career path in too much detail as life throws curve balls which are new opportunities”. If you are stuck on the career path you have planned, you might miss out on a great career. I listened to him and fell in love with energy efficiency; I don't see myself being in any other field.

        b. And personal?
My mom told me I can be anything I want, which allowed me to dream big, to never underestimate myself and have the confidence to tackle challenges in the workplace and aspire for senior roles.

4.    What personality trait do you think is crucial for success in business?
Resilience. Never give up on your goals and dreams.  Persevere even in the midst of challenges and hardships. Success doesn't come with ease.

5.    In your opinion, is a woman’s role in business different to that of a man? If so, how?
No, we are both trained in the same professions and gain the same experience. Women are capable of excelling in the same roles as men.

6.    How do you wind down after a busy day?
I'm addict of series - catching up on the next episode of a series lets me relax and wind down.
